Why Do You Hear a Noise During Cavitation Treatment?

Hearing a high-pitched ringing or buzzing sound during a 40K cavitation treatment is commonly associated with bone conduction and can vary from person to person. It does not automatically mean hearing damage, but cavitation devices should never be used on or close to the head and neck, and any persistent ear discomfort should be evaluated by a qualified healthcare professional.
Many first-time users of ultrasonic cavitation devices report hearing a high-pitched or ringing noise during the session—especially around the ears and head area.

This sound is completely normal and is caused by bone conduction. The ultrasonic waves used during the treatment travel through your soft tissue and reflect off the bone structures, especially near your head. As a result, the sound is amplified and perceived internally.

Tip: To reduce the discomfort, avoid using the device too close to your head or neck, and consider using protective earplugs during the session.

What Is Ultrasonic Cavitation?

Ultrasonic cavitation is a non-invasive body-contouring treatment that uses low-frequency ultrasound energy, commonly around 40 kHz, on specific body areas such as the abdomen, thighs, hips, and arms. It is designed for body-sculpting applications and should not be presented as a substitute for weight-loss treatment, medical care, or surgical liposuction.

During treatment, the handpiece transmits ultrasound energy through conductive gel into the intended body area. Treatment protocols, candidate suitability, expected outcomes, and maintenance requirements should always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and local regulations.

For a complete operating overview, read our guide on how to use a cavitation machine safely.

40K cavitation machine Why You May Hear a Ringing Sound

Although 40 kHz is above the typical range of human hearing, some people perceive a ringing, buzzing, or whistling sound during treatment. The sensation is generally more noticeable when the treatment area is close to bony structures.

One explanation is bone conduction: vibration or acoustic energy can travel through body tissue and bone, allowing the inner ear to perceive a sound that is not necessarily heard through the air. Sensitivity differs between individuals, so one client may hear a clear tone while another hears little or nothing.

Do not interpret the presence or absence of sound as proof that the device is working correctly. Proper treatment depends on appropriate settings, consistent handpiece movement, sufficient conductive gel, correct treatment areas, and adherence to the device manual.

Keep Cavitation Away From the Head and Neck

40K cavitation is intended for approved body-contouring zones, not for facial, cranial, throat, or neck treatment. Do not use a body cavitation probe over or near the head, ears, eyes, thyroid area, carotid arteries, or other sensitive neck structures.

If a client reports pain, severe discomfort, dizziness, headache, unusual ringing that continues after the session, or any hearing change, stop treatment immediately. Do not continue simply by lowering the intensity; advise the client to seek medical advice when symptoms persist or are concerning.

Safety Considerations

Use cavitation equipment conservatively and only within the manufacturer’s approved treatment protocol.

Avoid head and neck misuse: Never use a body cavitation handpiece on the head, face, throat, neck, ears, or directly over major blood vessels.

Start with a lower intensity: Begin at a comfortable, manufacturer-recommended level and increase only when appropriate. Higher power is not automatically better and may increase discomfort.

Control session time: Follow the machine manual for maximum treatment time per area and recommended intervals between sessions. Avoid repeated passes over the same small area.

Keep the handpiece moving: Apply an adequate amount of conductive gel and move the probe continuously to help maintain even energy delivery.

Avoid metal accessories: Ask clients to remove jewelry and metal accessories from the treatment area before the session.

Screen for contraindications: Do not treat clients who are pregnant or breastfeeding, have implanted electronic devices such as pacemakers, have active cancer, severe liver or kidney disease, uncontrolled diabetes, thrombosis or major circulatory disorders, active skin infection or open wounds in the treatment area, or other contraindications stated in the device manual.

Use professional judgment: Clients with a history of hearing conditions, neurological symptoms, unexplained tinnitus, recent surgery, or ongoing medical treatment should consult an appropriate healthcare professional before treatment.

How to Reduce Sound Discomfort

The safest way to reduce perceived ringing is to keep treatment strictly within suitable body zones and use a comfortable intensity setting. Avoid treating too close to the ribs, spine, jawline, collarbone, or other prominent bony areas when possible.

Make sure the handpiece has full contact with adequately applied conductive gel, and do not hold the probe still in one position. If the sound becomes unpleasant, reduce the setting, move to a more suitable body area, or end the treatment.

What Results Can You Expect?

Cavitation is commonly used as part of a broader body-contouring plan. Results vary based on the treatment area, individual body composition, lifestyle, treatment protocol, and the quality of the equipment.

Clients should maintain realistic expectations. A balanced diet, hydration, physical activity, and appropriate follow-up treatments may support body-contouring goals, but results are not guaranteed and can differ substantially between individuals.

Professional Cavitation Equipment Recommendation

For salons, spas, distributors, and aesthetic professionals, choose equipment designed for professional body contouring, with clear operating parameters, reliable after-sales support, documented safety guidance, and handpieces suited to the intended treatment zones.
